INTRODUCTION
For this project I had to model and texture an environment for the character Maria.
Planning
I decided to design a kitchen for her to dance in as I could sit in my kitchen and have something to actually base it off.
Schedule
I spent approximately two days doing this project in total
Monday: Modelling and research
Tuesday: Texturing, Camera and Lights
Thursday: Rendering (my lights seemed to be causing an issue again so I waited until I could ask someone for help to render though I did try on Tuesday)
Mood Board and Colour Pallet
I wanted a typical kitchen look and decided to keep it very basic. Using some of the colour tone from my own kitchen and other pieces I found online to spice it up a little.
STORY
I started this project by watching a few tutorials online so I’d know where to start, then I dove straight into modelling whist sitting on my kitchen floor so that I could have a firsthand piece of resource material.
I made hollow boxes for my presses, whilst continuously checking in wire mode that everything was in the right place. I then combined the cubes I used to make my hollow box and duplicated to make all of my other presses and then I also combined them together. They were all placed into a layer for the bottom row presses and then the top row presses.
The most awkward bit about this was the corner press as I had to insert edge loops and stretch the polygon.
To make the fridge I took one of my hollow boxes and just scaled it up.
I made skirting boards by making a polygon cube and modelling it to be long and narrow then positioned it slightly under the cabinets as a skirting board. I edited it to fit perfectly by selected the end faces and dragging them into the place I wanted them.
I then made the table top with another polygon cube, I flattened it out and bevelled one side of the edges. I made the oven hood in much the same way except instead of flatening it out i pulled out the edge so that it had a more triangular shape.
I made the doors seperatly from the presses, i again made a polygon cube and flatened it down then using the extruding technique I scaled in and up a pattern like the one on my kitchen press doors. I then duplicated it and placed it on all of the presses.
To make the top row of presses I duplcated the bottom ones, dragged them up into position and scaled them to size.
And then I did the same with the doors.
Then again I did the same for the fridge.
I then inserted a floor plane and walls. I spent some time making the detail for the top of the presses and placed them all around the top of the upper presses and fridge.
I wanted to make an oven so I deleted the doors and started editing and placed the top of the oven on the counter.
I extruded the detail onto the face of the oven.
I then added on the details for the oven.
After making the fan I made a pipe for the oven by cutting the hoop into quarters.
I then made a table and chairs. Using cylinders for the table and cubes for the chairs.
Then I also made a plant for the corner by using cylinders and making one face bigger and then extruding in slightly. I then added more cylinders for the branches and topped them with spheres that I slightly modelled using soft selection.
I then inserted a window by inserting edge loops into the wall plane and selecting that face and then deleting it. I inserted stretched out cubes to make the window design and added a new plane onto the back of those. Leaving space for a light and also keeping it separate so that I could give it a separate texture.
I tried to follow a tutorial to make a sink but for some reason my whole model ended up black so I decided to figure it out myself like the rest of the kitchen. I made another hollow box, bevelled and inserted it into the hole I cut out of the countertop using edge loops, like the window. I then inserted a plane underneath it with one at the side for the draining board. The taps where made using cubes and edge loops.
I then decided to make a small stereo to place on the counter so that Maria would have something to dance too.
Finally I added on door handles.
I then began to add the textures.
Rendering
Since I had a lot of problems with the lights I did a lot of different renders, which wasn’t a problem at all. I rendered in the mental ray format and saved a few different images to see the difference in what I was doing.
Reflective Analysis
I really enjoyed making this and I am quite proud that I made this. Instead of just diving straight in, I spent some time looking up ones that other people had made and watched few videos to see what problems other people had encountered. Which seemed to work great for me as the only problem I still have are the lights. I added in spotlights and they were fine but when I tried to render with the main lights it was either too dark or too bright. So I may have to look up some stuff about lights to finally fix this. My model may not be the right size for Maria, but since I was sick last week I will find out in class how to bring her over and then I can scale everything to fit her. I also ended up with a lot more layers than I usually do, but this didn’t seem to cause a problem with rendering. I hope we get more environment modelling as I honestly did enjoy making that.
